CLOSING RECEPTION & HISPANIC HERITAGE DAY CELEBRATION: OCTOBER 18 / 1-6PM

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Islip Arts Council invited Hispanic/Latinx artists to showcase their work.

Inside the Arts Council Gallery, an art exhibit titled "Collective Heritage" will be on display celebrating works by Hispanic and Latinx artists. The closing reception will take place in the gallery as well.

IAC will host a full day of activities in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Day, including performances by flamenco and salsa dancers, as well as other traditional Hispanic dances; Sol y Sombra Spanish Dance Company will be presenting a program of Salsa/Latin, Argentine Tango and Flamenco dance. El Teatro Rodante Hispanico will perform traditional and popular dances celebrating Latin American and Caribbean culture.

In addition, Dr. Drum and Bomba Yo will present drumming instruction and a vibrant performance. Dr. Drum is known as one of the Top National Afro Rican Bomba Artists. Bronx native Jose Ortiz, aka: Dr. Drum, is a nationally highly acclaimed professional on-stage performer, educator in Pan-African, Caribbean and Latin culture and is a self-taught percussionist of AfroCaribbean rhythms. For these past twenty years, he has been an adamant advocate for the cultural arts as well as an adamant activist, organizer and educator of Afro Puerto Rican Bomba, a traditional African derived music and art form, which was brought to the Americas from the African slaves.

There will be a painting opportunity in the courtyard featuring a live model depicting Frida Kahlo from our Masters on Main Street Program.

All events are free and open to the public.
